Historical Background of Opal Hot Springs
Opal Hot Springs, originally known as Ōkauia Thermal Springs, is located near Matamata in New Zealand's Waikato region. The thermal pools were discovered in 1886 by Josiah Clifton Firth on his land. In 1900, the property was sold to W.J. Aitken, and Captain Henry Tizard became the first manager, constructing three concrete pools and establishing camping grounds. By the 1920s, the springs had become a popular destination, attracting visitors from near and far to bathe and camp.
One of the private pools, Ramaroa, carries a Māori legend. The story tells of a chief and his wife who, after warming themselves by a fire at dusk, were turned to stone. The pool’s heat is said to come from the eternal fire beneath their petrified canoe, Ramaroa.
In 2000, Ōkauia Thermal Springs was officially renamed Opal Hot Springs. Today, the site offers modern amenities, including camping grounds, barbecue areas, a children’s play area, hot pools, and private pools available for hire.
Cultural and Geothermal Significance
The Opal Hot Springs area holds deep significance for the Ngāti Hinerangi iwi as part of their geothermal taonga (treasures). The Okauia No.5 block, which includes the Ramaroa spring, was sold into private ownership in the late 19th century. A verbal agreement initially allowed Ngāti Hinerangi continued access to the site, but by the 1920s, new ownership required the iwi to pay for entry, leading to long-standing grievances.
These grievances were acknowledged in a 2019 deed of settlement with the Crown, recognising the importance of the springs to Ngāti Hinerangi. Today, Opal Hot Springs continues to blend historical, cultural, and recreational significance, offering a tranquil retreat that honours its storied past.
